POLYURETHANES............Polyurethane
markets are large and diversified. Introduced to the U.S. more
than 40 years ago, PUR foams soared from under 10 million pounds
annually in the mid-fifties to over 4 billion pounds. Added to this sum
will be urethane coatings, microcellular foams, solid elastomers,
adhesives, sealants, and fibers, bringing the total to more than 6.5
billion pounds, and about $14 billion of compounded products. Some
segments of the urethane industry – powder coatings, hot-melt adhesives,
sealants, latexes – are expected to maintain strong growth rates.
Others, such as flexible foam, show signs of maturity.
Two urgent
priorities – energy conservation and motor vehicle safety – became
especially important in boosting the markets for polyurethanes. Rigid
PUR-foam building insulation reduces need for precious heating fuel, and
consumes less energy in manufacture than glass fiber insulation. To
meet federal regulations for impact resistance while reducing vehicle
weight, the auto makers have turned to microcellular PUR fascia, bumpers
and front ends. These parts are made by the RIM process, which also
saves energy. However, polyurethane elastomers have to compete with
less expensive thermoplastic polyolefins (TPO), which are gaining in
this market.
