COATINGS..........During the
past
decades, the coatings industry has faced many hurdles:
economic, environmental, and energy. However, as the XXI century unfolds,
opportunities
continue to
abound for companies with environmentally safer technologies.
The US coatings industry is huge. In addition to house
paints, it provides finishes for autos, marine, machinery, appliances, cans,
furniture, packaging, plastics;
also coil coatings, magnetic tape coatings, electrical insulating varnishes,
maintenance finishes, traffic
paint, roof coatings, etc.
In
the mid 1970s, air pollution regulations were the most significant factors
promoting newer
types of
products and application methods. The historic Rule 66, adopted some
40
years
ago for the Los Angeles
area, has spurred similar legislation in other regions and states and
finally nationwide. Additional
government action involved solvents, mercury, lead, noise levels
in the work
place, EMI (electro-magnetic interference) shielding, etc. As a result, the share of
conventional solvent-based systems in
OEM product coatings has declined,
giving way to powder
coatings, high solids, water-borne, electrodeposited and radiation curable
systems.
